I think there are plenty of good things about every tuning.  The most common non-pedal tuning these days is the C6th. There is more instructional material to be had for this tuning, so I would say it is the most accessable tuning to start on.  The most common C6th tuning is (from high strings to low) G, E, C, A, G, E, C, A for an eight string neck.
