When I move the bar up the neck to a new position, I can hear the movement on some of the strings. What's the best way to eliminate that noise?

There are basically two types of situations to watch out for. One is when you are moving the bar with no notes playing. In this case, you want to move without any sound at all. The best answer is to palm block the strings while you are moving the bar.

The other situation is where you pick some notes and then slide into a new position. In this case, you only want to hear the strings that you picked. Here are some tips for this situation:

  • Before you pick the strings that you are going to move with the bar, use a palm block or a pick block to make sure there are no other strings ringing out.
  • When you pick the strings before you slide, make sure you pick them hard enough. If they are not vibrating hard enough under the bar, other strings may make equal noise as you slide up.
The movement of the bar will always produce a certain amount of "string drag" (as I call it), but if the strings you pick are very dominant and the bar pressure is even on all strings as you slide, you will eliminate a lot of the noise.
