V-V
One of the common techniques used in jazz harmony to reinforce the tonality of a particular key center is to enhance the dominant chord with it’s own V. This is usually called V-V. For example, in the bridge to “I’ve Got Rhythm” (key of Bb), the dominant progression is D7 \ \ | G7 \ \ | C7 \ \ | F7 \ \.. See chords (1) thru (4) in the tab. This harmony can be emphasized with the V of each of these dominant chords. The progression would then be Am7 D7 | Dm7 G7 | Gm7 C7 | Cm7 F7. See chords (5) thru (12) in the tab. Play this run by preceding each dominant V with the ii chord of the V, which forms the V-V . In our example, the D7 chord (6) at fret 14, A->Bb knee lever, is preceded by the Am7 (V-V), chord (5), two frets in front at fret 12 with no pedals. The G7, chord (8), at fret 14 pedal 6 is preceded by Dm7 (V-V), chord (7), at the same fret 14 with pedal 6 AND knee lever A->Bb. The next dominant chord is C7, fret 12, knee lever A->Bb. Drop back two frets to fret 10, no pedals, for the Gm7 (V-V) that leads to the C7. The F7 is at fret 12 pedal 6, with the Cm7 (V-V), pedal 6 and A->Bb, that leads to it. Another option is to start the Am7 D7 of the run at fret 9. See chords (13) and (14) and follow the previous pattern.
