Altered ii-V Progressions
Altered ii-V forms are very useful as substitutions for the basic
ii-V. Any of the chord
progressions in this tab can substitute for a Dm7-G7-Cmaj7. The Dm7 in the
tab is unaltered. If the ii-V in the song calls for a Dm7b5, then flatten the V note of the Dm7 - press pedal 6 in chords (1),(4); pedal 5 in chords (7),(10).
Of course, you can just use the Dm7 form as tabbed, changing the chord quality, which is perfectly acceptable for many substitutions.
The G7 in all these examples is altered. Notice that all of these forms
have many notes tabbed since there are extensions and alterations in these forms.
You should experiment with these forms to hear the tonality of different combinations of notes. Even at the same fret, leaving out one string or adding the other can have a noticeable difference in the effect of the sound. For example,
G7 chord (2) has all 4 altered notes so it's a perfect G7alt chord. Experiment with different combos of strings to find out the options you have.
On those forms where there is a root, you have the option of leaving the root in place,
which is important for establishing the chord motion and has the biggest influence on the tonality of the chord and overall progression.
Also, be careful that the melody does not conflict with the notes of the chords. If there is a melody conflict, it will tend to be more acceptable if the dissonance is in different registers, or is buried deep in the chord rather than as the lead note of the voicing. As always, your ear is the best guide.
