This site looks very user friendly to me. I've been a country picker all my life, and still don't have a day-job.Please say hello to Redd for me from the gang up here in Edmonton.

Hello, RIcky I have jst discovered your site thorugh the Steel Guitar Forum. I have been a guitarst since age 11 (I'm fifty now) and took up pedal steel just two and a half years ago. I found your chord finder charts amazing and (probably)EXACTLY what I was after to solve my (personal) issues about cracking the top two strings fretboard map! ... I intend to visit here more frequently, but, thank you for this wonderful addition to the compendium of work on the steel!

Hi Ricky I just found your site throughbobby Seymores website . This is a great website , I have a Sho Bud Profesional 8and 4 D 10. I have been playing for 15 yrs .I just play the E9 neck , not much of a C6 player yet. I watched yor video on the site , and WOW! I realy learned a lot from thoes licks and turn arounds I was ready to trade my Bud for a more modern guitar , but I think I will keep it and practice what I saw you play on the video .Watching you play has restarted my interest in learning more stuff!. Thanks for your Efforts in this site, and for beeing willing to show all us other aspireing steelers yourCOOL tricks .

Ricky; words fail me!. What a brilliant site. A New acquaintance of mine, one Rupert Kingston living about 30miles from me over here in England introduced me to your site.I have his Sho Bud twin 10 Pro 111 in for refinishing, going blonde!.Those beauties at "house of wood" really inspire me. I fell in love with steel at 7yrs of age, made one at 17yrs, have made various lap and pedal steels, a total of 27 to date. AT 66yrs I am still the worst steel player in the whole world, but the love of the instrument won't go away.I make a noise, I won't say play, on a 10string single neck that I made myself, 3/4" rose wood body, maple neck, two triple coil pickups. Built for the late Valentine Havers in 1979.This is one of a pair, the other one was built in 78' for one Bob Merrideth of Ft Lauderdale Florida USA.Congratulations on a wonderful site, Dave at WIGGOsteels@AOL.com

I have a marlen 210. When I refinished it, under 1 of the wood fretboards it had "dec 03 1970". This thing was a real weather color of metalflake blue. I sanded it down and refinished it in a clear polyurethane. It had some nice wood inlay on it.I think it was a sin to put blue metalflake over wood as nice as this. Man this thing is beutiful now. Do you have any idea what 1 of these restored is worth.

Hi Ricky! It was a pleasure meeting you at the Steel Guitar Jamboree last year in Dallas. Recently moved to Austin and love it. If you are playing out and about, shoot me an email, we'd love to come out! (My sister moved here as well) - spicyaustinchic@yahoo.com.

Hi Ricky, I spent last weekend with Eddie and Irene Fulawka to pick up my new "solid ebony" double neck Fulawka steel. I have some pics to send to you and was wondering if you would post a couple to your site. I also have enough Indonesian Makassar Ebony left to make two more steels if anyone is interested. By the way I love your Blue Darlin; Eddie also played a video that he made of you last year at Scotty's convention in St. Louis My e-mail address is: nelson_giles@mitel.com Looking forward to hearing from you. Cheers, Nelson

Hey Ricky - nice site! Give me a hollar at krue@hotmail.com

This is one of the best sites I have visited. Absent all the commercialism. I try to start a new instrument ever one to two years. I suffered through 7 years of classical violin to play fiddle with Dad and Uncle Henry. My real hero appears to be unknown or no longer around, Bert Rivera, played a lot with Hank Thompson and Ray Price. His Bell city Chimes has had me scared for 30 years to attempt to learn this instrument, but I ain't dead yet, so if it is the death of me, what a way to go. Reading so much notation for years, makes tab just as hard for me as formal notation appears to those who have played tab all their career. But, notes did not help when I finally "Wintered Well" and started to play fiddle. It was lick by lick, and "Boy are you watching what I'm doing," and "Shut up about what position this is in, this is fiddle, now watch me. Thanks for the site.

He's working full time and going to school at night. See Dale occassionally when he comes this way. We miss all the ole gang, but his new band is good. Hope you are doing well! Take Care! Hello Ricky....I watched the video on your playing and I am so thrilled with your work. I have an MSA D-10 and I'm very interested in leaning some of the older licks using the second string half drop on the E9th tuning....for instance the turnaround John Huey did on Conway Twitty's song...After The Fire Is Gone. I'm also into the C6th tuning pretty heavy. Keep up the great work friend your souning fabulous.

Hi Ricky, thanks for all the help you continue to give me with my new Pro II Custom (SGF). Just found this site. It's Grrreat! Nice "licks" video, but now I need a 1/2 speed control. How about a "Rickys Country" section for E9? Jeff's is very deep for a freebee. E9 is feeling alone and left out. See you on the Forum...

Hi Ricky; I found a website at www/skobrien.com/ChordFinder/ChordFinder.asp for Pedal Steel Copedants that would be fantastic for finding chords except that it allows me to punch in my copedant but, when I ask for a chord, it says “Done” and comes back with a blank sheet. Could you advise if this site is still functional.

Hi Ricky, I,m a 32 year veteran of Pedal Steel. I,m still playing my Marrs that Duane built for me in 1980. It was the second single neck 10 on a double body he made. The first one went to Lloyd Green...I believe. There is no pad on the back neck because I don't like the looks of a pad. It has 6 floors & 5 knees and I have my own tuning that I,ve been playing for afew years. It works out great for me.I had Duane put extra pedals on it because at the time I was on the road and needed a lighter guitar to tote around and had came up with some changes on E9th tunning that would give me some chords, etc. so I would not completely miss my C6th tunning.Take a look it. E6/9 1 2 3 4 5 6 LL UP LR RL RR F# +G C# +Eb +D/Eb G# +A E +F# -Eb +F B +C# -Bb G# +A -G F# -F E -Eb +F C# -B -C +D A -G# I first met Duane Marrs in 1978 when I worked at Sho-Bud. Paul Franklin,Sr. also worked there at the time. I am not being a bragger here...but I had come up with an idea for a knee lever stop after we had added the 11th knee lever to Terry Bethel's Super Pro when he was playing for Mel Tillis. There was not much room under his guitar but we got it under there and it made me start thinking how to save space...I never told anyone about my idea at Sho-Bud. .When Duane was building his proto-type steel I mentioned to him at his shop about it and he liked the idea and used it and sold me my guitar real cheap...ha,ha. He is a very good person and I have nothing but respect and praise for him to say the least!!! I live in Sarasota, Florida. Not much good country music down here. My all time favorite Steel player is and always will be Jimmy Day. No one has ever played with that kind of sole like he did. He made you feel what he played more than hear what he played. I remember once when he had a gig in some juke-joint out Dickerson Road in Nashville but he had put his amp in the pawn shop so I loaned him my old Christmas Tree Sho-Bud amp for the night. I went out to listen to him play and some guy game to the stage on the first set and asked him how long had he been playing Steel? Jimmy asked the guy what time it was and the guy said 9:30 and Jimmy said "Oh, 'bout 30 minutes. I like your web site and keep on Steelin' !!!

Nice site, Ricky! I just watched you playing with Dale Watson on the DVD "For fans only". Some pretty awesome stuff, and yet you make it look soooo easy! At first it made me think "So this is what it can really sound like, why do I even try, I'll never be any good, might as well quit". Then I decided to trade in my trusty old AVM for something better and begin playing a lot more. Thanks for the inspiration!

It's a surpise and a pleasure to find your site. I may be the last non pedal steel guitar player in Missouri. Anybody else out there??? Seems like everybody else is only interested in how many pedals or knee levers you have. Or, what new device/gizmo you can buy to try to make yourself sound better. I play a Fender (8 string) Triple neck String Master or a Gibson (8 and 7 string)Console Grande. Don Helms, is the Master of the Gibson Console Grande. I really enjoyed the pics on your site of the vintage steels. Each one has a unique voice. Maybe Fender or Gibson will make them again someday? For my taste, there is nothing as cool as the sound and tone of a Stingmaster patched straight into a Vintage Fender Amp.

Hi Ricky, Thanks for a wonderful site. I live in the UK and have being playing steel guitar for 25 years. I use a Sho-Bud Super Pro D-10 (22 years old ) through a Profex 2 and Samson 200 watt stereo power amp with two Peavey Nashville 12" speaker's, , it's the best sound i ever have had, i have tried all other makes of amps but this beats the lot for sound, over the years i've worked with a lot of USA artist's including Buddy Emmonds / Norm Hamlet/ Lloyd Green/ Mel Haggard/ Buddy was very helpful and gave a lot of good advice . At the moment i am spending a lot of time learning the back neck C6 as most of the backing i done in the past was straight foward country music and not much swing stuff, Your site has helped no end with the chord finder . You must spend a lot time working on the web site as it is fantastic, keep up the great work and keep pickin. thanks again

Hi Ricky: Hello again. Went through your house of wood and saw some of the nicest refinished steel guitars ever. The refinishing work is fabulous. Everyone a real gem. I;ve had several in my years of playing, had a triple eight Bigbsy, a double ten Sho-bud, a double ten ZB, a double twelve Sierra, a double ten Emmons, a double ten Domland, and my latest built in 1996-a twin ten Sierra. Loved them as a steel player would but you can't keep them all on a musicians pay. Wonderful site Ricky. Regards, Louis Armentaro from Livingston, Montana

Hi Ricky: Been messing around the steel guitar sites and came across yours and spent a lot of time on it and watching your video. Very enjoyable. I wanted to hear the song Lost My Heart in San Antone but couldn't download it. I was disappointed as I am a great fan of traditional and western Texas swing music. I operate a sound and announcing service and usual play good western music when I work our sound and announcing services and it sounds like your music would be nice to promote. If you have a CD or cassette with that type of music we would be privileged to play it here in Montana. I will not under any circumstances play any of the so called modern western schreeching crap that is out there on records. If you want we would appreciate your music. Send it to us at:Louis Armentaro, Sound Over The West, 624 North Yellowstone St., Livingston, Montana 59047 Our email address is ladonna2@ycsi.net. Enjoyed listening to you. I am also a friendly steel player. Regards, Louis Armentaro

Hello Ricky, Just a little story how i got hooked on Marlin guitars .In the early 19 60s I was ready for a pedal steel guitar After thinking that i was tired of the 3 neck stringmaster. I was on the phone with Jody Carver,And he Had mentioned The name Marlen . I had never heard of Marlin but took his word ,and today i am still playing a marlin guitar..and my friend Don Cerce plays one also. I also had the pleasure of meeting Leanord Stadler .In New York City. He was in town to see the Worlds Fair , So he stopped in to listen to the band > He really was a great person

You provided some mighty fine steel when I was following Gary P, Larry Joe, Joe Pat, etc. at the White Elephant and Three Teardrops. Danced-out a couple of pairs of boots in those 2 years we were on the trail of "real" Texas music. Hope to catch you when we get down Austin way sometime. Regards, Duncan

I read with much interest, Jeff's articles on the C6th. I am new at C6th and was wondering why Jeff does not use the number system for chords. Wouldn't it be easier to memorize the progressions in one key with numbers, then a person would just need to move the patterns for any other key. Don Benoit steelguitarist@shaw.ca

Hi Ricky, Very Nice Web site! I am interested in getting a steel lap guitar and learning to play. I tried to play an old acoustic guitar that I had, but can't get my fingers to hit the strigs right when making the chords. I had my left arm basically pulled off at the shoulder, and after all the surgery and stuff, the fingers do move and all, but not well enough for forming chords. I have always loved the sound of the steel guitar, and thought maybe I could do that. Any suggestions on where to obtain the materials and parts, etc. to build my own hawiian styel steel electric guitar? thanks sudzy@trip.net

You know, a place where guys/gals can look up players that are mentioned on the credits for CD's , Album's ect... Example; Charlie Owen,, I was at a friends house last night he put on a Paul Davis Album (vinyl not CD) the title of the album was Ride Em Cowboy... I think... the steel plaayer was Charlie Owen.... who is he , where is he,,, whats he doin now????????? Ya See What I mean?? wouldnt it be nice to locate guys like Charlie? you have a chord finder ... now what about a Player Finder????? "Yall Come"

Hi Davis-Cox Musical Instruments: I just visited your website for the first time and it's very nice. The Chord Finder appears to be a very useful device. Can it be expanded to apply to the pedal steel guitar tunings for the E-9th, C-6th and Universal? For example, you would input the most common pedal and knee lever changes associated with these tunings and the Chord Finder would come up with the chord settings with and without pedals and knee levers pressed. Plese look into this because I believe it would be a good enhancement for your program. Finally, on your Photo Album page, could you list the instruments pictured next to the person's name. That would be useful information. :-) Keep up the good work with your website. Hi Ricky! Nice Web site. It sure is gonna seem like a long time till MY new Fulawka gets here! Ed says it will be after the first of the year (but added "I'll see what I can do" - whatever THAT means!). Thanks for the reply to my post on the Forum. The Blue Darlin is a beauty! Hope mine looks half as nice. I'm getting the birdseye lacquer also, but mine will have a natural-finish neck with black fret markings, a walnut-stained birdseye top, and the front "strip" will be the natural finish birdseye.

Al Brisco; Paul Evans and many others will be there; and they want me to come up to do a seminar and to play the show also...so we'll see......eh. Ricky

You must be the envy of many steel players to be able to play this kind of music. Thanks to you and Dale for bringing so much enjoyment. Any chances you'll be coming to Canada? All the best.../Anne

Lefty Player; just started with about 8 months learning to play a lap steel; actually starting under the guidance of an older fellow, learning the Oahu Publication material. I sure would like to get a hold of a Fender D-8! To bad they don't make them anymore. I guess because I'm interested in Hawaiian style music I will eventually move on to the Jerry Byrd C6th method and go from there. May even consider an Excel D-8 for long term goals! Great site! I am using a bunch of the photos of people's steels for screen- savers now. I am playing a lapsteel that was made by a High School student in Fort Bragg, Ca., in their woodshop. Made from a slab of redwood driftwood, with a home-made pickup. I Got it at the local thriftstore for $12.00. I'm hooked! Now I'm looking for a better instrument...

I have to agree with most on how fabulous Ricky can play the steel guitar! Dale is one lucky guy to have such a talented steel player... "frenchie"

  Posted by: "Frenchie" ~Lisa Condon~
Let me start by saying that Ricky Davis is not only one of the best steel players out there today but one of the premier gurus of everything that is steel guitar and that includes the making of them as well. I've known Ricky for several years and am honored that he will be playing on my upcoming CD. His work ethic at everything he does is at a level seldom achieved by most. I've seen and heard the steel guitar shown in this site and I can tell ya it's worth every penny. If you want the best, dial one of them up right now! Ricky Davis will be known as the one of the greatest steel players ever and you will own a piece of history! -Ty Braddock

  Posted by: Ty Braddock (www.tybraddock.com)
this looks like it will be a very good steel.I Cant hardly wait to own one. ft.lauderdale,fl 33310 p.o.box 8964

Fun survey. If I understood the "favorite brand" section right, 30 some percent of the people who owned an Emmons (for example) liked the Emmons the best. But,left unstated, over 60% liked another guitar they owned better. So it looks like no make claimed even 50% loyalty of those that owned more than one guitar. Probably that would make more sense if I thought about it, but that's interesting to me.

Great site! You need to do this again in about six months to a year to see if things change. Over a period of a year or two you might see trends in the steel guitar market change.

I enjoyed visiting your site. I am extremely impressed with the SS Hawaiian. That is one beautiful instrument. Regards, Bob

Hi David; now if Ted uses Jason Lollar to custom wind specificly two pickups w/blend control, exactly designed for the specific string spacing between the two pickups and for a ten string 24" scale steel> then yes. But I doubt very seriously Ted uses that system> it would cost him too much to have a guitar sound that good; and then he wouldn't make any money. As explained in all the specific details oN the SS HAWAIIAN page; A custom steel will be FAR superior in every detail; to a manufactured to sell by quantity steel. Therefore the SS HAWAIIAN is much more expensive; because you pay for these explicit to detail type things. Have fun and thanks for askin. Ricky

  Posted by: Ricky Davis
Thanks for the site1 Are your pickups the ones Ted Smith uses in his laps? Thats sure a pretty on on the SG Forum. Dave

  Posted by: John Sims
Hey Kay Das; just e-mail me what you want or looking for; and we can go from there. The SS HAWAIIAN is a custom built Steel Guitar and is a awesome sound; and Jerry Byrd himself is even impressed with it in every way. Make sure to look through the ss hawaiian page at all the details explaining how this guitar is built; then you can see the price at the end. It is expensive to build a custom Steel guitar; that is all machined and no molds or fabricated parts. If a steel player is looking for a cheap lightweight steel to get them by for sound and economy; there is pleanty of those out there; but the SS HAWAIIAN is the Rolls Royce of them all; and you know how many people have a Rolls??(ha...
